 Luna and the Magic Paintbrush

Luna, a curious little girl with golden curls and sparkling eyes, loved to explore the attic of her grandmother's old house. One sunny afternoon, while rummaging through dusty boxes, she found an old paintbrush wrapped in a shimmering cloth. The bristles glowed faintly in rainbow colors.

"Grandma, what’s this?" Luna asked, holding it up.

Her grandmother smiled mysteriously. "That’s a magic paintbrush. Whatever you paint with it comes to life!"

Luna couldn’t believe her ears. She grabbed her sketchbook and decided to test it out. Carefully, she painted a bright red apple.

As soon as she finished, the apple popped right out of the page and landed in her lap! It smelled delicious. Luna took a bite—it was the juiciest apple she’d ever tasted.

"This is amazing!" she giggled, already thinking of what to paint next.

Luna’s town was having a festival the next day, but she remembered her mother saying they didn’t have enough decorations.

"I’ll paint decorations for everyone!" she thought. She started painting balloons, streamers, and lanterns. One by one, they sprang to life, floating and twinkling around her room.

"Tomorrow will be the most magical festival ever!" she said with a grin.

At the festival, everyone marveled at Luna’s decorations. But Luna, wanting to impress even more, decided to paint something huge—a rainbow unicorn!

As the unicorn sprang to life, it neighed loudly and started galloping around, startling the crowd. "Oh no!" Luna cried. "I didn’t think this through!"

She quickly grabbed the paintbrush and painted a golden fence. The unicorn trotted into the fenced area, calm and happy, munching on some grass Luna had also painted.

By the end of the festival, Luna’s creations had brought joy to everyone. Her grandmother came over and hugged her.

"You’ve done wonderfully, Luna," she said. "But remember, with great power comes great responsibility. Always use the paintbrush wisely."

Luna nodded, smiling. She promised to use the magical brush to help others and create happiness wherever she went.

The next morning, she carefully wrapped the brush back in its shimmering cloth, ready for her next adventure.

 What Are Cognitive Skills, Anyway?

Cognitive skills are the core skills your brain uses to think, read, learn, remember, reason, and pay attention. Working together, they take incoming information and move it into the bank of knowledge you use every day at school, at work, and in life.

Each of your cognitive skills plays an important part in processing new information. That means if even one of these skills is weak, no matter what kind of information is coming your way, grasping, retaining, or using that information is impacted. In fact, most learning struggles are caused by one or more weak cognitive skills.

Here’s a brief description of each of your cognitive skills, as well as struggles you may be experiencing if that skill is weak:

Memory/Working

What it does: Enables you to hang on to information while in the process of using it

Common problems when this skill is weak: Having to read the directions again in the middle of a project, difficulty following multi-step directions, forgetting what was just said in a conversation

Logic & Reasoning

What it does: Enables you to reason, form ideas, and solve problems

Common problems when this skill is weak: Frequently asking “What do I do next?” or saying “I don’t get this,” struggling with math, feeling stuck or overwhelmed
